I think of all things that we find difficult to give. The hardest of all might be patience., especially to those who we love the most and spend the most time with. Maybe because we allow our true selves to show……
Not too long ago my husband and I took our usual sunday drive for ice cream on a snowy day in february. Sigmund had already placed the girls in their carseats when I got in and noticed savannah our 2 year old was wearing church shoes with her jogging suit.
I got out of the car, found her sneakers and switched them out… you see it’s happened before.. A couple months ago I was out of town and found out that sigmund had sent olivia to school( despite my efforts to lay out an outfit for each day) , in her pink patton leather church shoes, with every outfit. So, I knew I had to explain to him an important rule when raising girls.
“Sigmund. Fashion rule number one, never put on church shoes with jogging pants!” He laughed, rather defensively, what’s the big deal ., at least she’s wearing shoes! Yes, but i’m trying to tell you that it matters to girls, maybe not to boys but it matters to girls., because girls are mean and they notice and they make fun of you.
Now, I was obviously not showing a lot of patience for my dear husband. Maybe because he hit me in a sensitive spot. Maybe because I was afraid of what the other mothers might think of me. Maybe because I had been the recipient of evil comments from wicked girls in my childhood….. He explained to me that I would have gotten a better result by first thanking him for all the ways he is a good dad, for being loving, and generous for putting on her shoes..after all, he is a man who only owns three pairs of shoes . For some people it’s the toothbrush that wakes the sleeping monster…… for me, I guess it was the shoes. So next time I will try to show patience, to take the high ground and switch the shoes without a word…… if love is patient, I guess he has a lot to learn about shoes and I have a lot to learn about love.
